Mark DeVries has done the world of youth ministry a huge favor by writing this book. In this book he is like that one friend you have who tells you what you need to hear, not what you hope to hear. You’ll be a better youth worker (paid or volunteer) because of the time you spend reading this book.

DeVries tackles some big issues that all youth ministries struggle with:

Structure

Politics

Program

Strategy

Health

…just to name a few.

What I appreciate most about this book is that DeVries isn’t a youth worker who had some success and decided to write a book about it. He’s a youth worker who has helped many youth ministries discover how to become healthy and functional. The biggest problems are usually hidden within the youth ministry more than caused by outside factors.

Stop what you’re doing and order this book today! It will set you free from what keeps your youth ministry ineffective!

My generation is a bumpy ride through the troubled life of a sinful person (like us) traveling down an equally messy road alongside his remarkably patient Maker. This journey takes us to places nice Christians don’t stereotypically go to have interactions that our Savior stereotypically wouldn’t miss. What we find along the way is that our eyes are opened to what Christ really meant by loving our neighbor as ourselves. We are transformed and our neighbor meets Christ as we embrace life the way He wants us to live it.

As the poster child for safe Christian living, I was surprisingly challenged by My Generation. What I love about this book is my perspectives were challenged and mind was broadened. Safe and guarded Christianity is the antithesis of the life Josh has found in Christ and shares with us through My Generation. Most of us need to be shaken up a bit – look at this book as your thought blender. If you tend to play it safe like me, be prepared to be have your mind stretched, have some good laughs, maybe shed a tear and get your heart challenged. You’ll experience it all as you encounter the real-life characters Josh introduces to us in the pages of this hope-filled and change-inducing book.

My Generation, warts and all, is the story each of us should hope to call our own… radical transformation of lost souls by an insanely loving God. One of those souls, surprisingly may be your own as we come to understand more deeply the life Christ calls us to. Discovering our lostness and running to the source of grace is the beginning of a messy, yet freeing and restorative journey. My Generation will help reveal that path that we’ve always hoped existed – and hopefully will help others find. Upon finding it, you will know you’re finally beyond the safe and ineffective living most American Christians have come to settle for.

My Generation by Josh Riebock – Do yourself a favor and read it. Click the link at the top left side of this review to purchase a copy. Return here and leave a comment to let me know your thoughts after you’re done.

One caution about this book: Because of subject matter, I would not recommend this book for those under 14 years old

If you’ve already seen this movie, check out Vince Parker’s post about it. He’s started a conversation that you’ll want to be part of.

I saw The Book of Eli with a little hesitation. I was sure Hollywood was up to something. Maybe they were pulling out an ancient manuscript to try to put the Bible in a bad light or question its authority. I was very happy to be incredibly wrong on that point.

This movie is an amazingly creative way to touch on some deep spiritual truths and disciplines. It’s a great call to faith in action, as well. There are a few scenes in the movie where everything falls apart from our perspective, but God’s plan (we find out later) moves the story on to the outcome he had in mind all along. (That could be seen as a spoiler, but what point would there be in the story if it didn’t come to the right resolution?)

I highly recommend seeing this movie.

Caution: It’s clean, but does have some bad language and violence. I recommend this for high school age and older. Of course, as with just about any movie, you should screen it first before suggesting it to your students.

I rode a roller coaster all week through this book. Lucado takes his readers through many legitimate fears that people can have outside of God’s design. Any fear, however, turns to faith as we gain God’s perspective about life’s issues. A phrase repeated a few times toward the end of the book becomes the mantra of the otherwise fear-ridden child of God. Lucado writes, “Everything will work out in the end. If it’s not working out, it’s not the end.” The end, Lucado assures us, may happen in this life or in the next. Either way, we have nothing to fear in light of God’s faithfulness.

I highly recommend reading this book and keeping it handy as a lifeline for when we fall back to a stance of fear. Fear is as inevitable as God’s ability to resolve it. Lucado has condensed great promises of God, paired it with nuggets of wisdom and fleshes out the message through illustrations. This 3-corded masterpiece will banish fear while boosting faith.

I think a better title for this book is The Best Of MoreThanDodgeball.com. Josh has pulled the best from his blog and put them into a pocket-size book of essential nuggets of wisdom for youth ministry. I highly recommend grabbing this book. At $4.99 per copy, it’s even a great gift book for youth ministry leaders. It would be a great way to say “Thank you”, “I believe in you”, “Happy birthday” or “Merry Christmas”. Of course, don’t forget to include a $5.00 Starbucks giftcard so they can enjoy a tasty beverage as they read it.

Now that I’ve seen it, I want to tell everybody to go see it!

Reviewing this movie would be difficult without spoiling the story line. Instead, I’ll write why I’m so excited about it from a youth ministry point of view. Depending on your bent toward youth ministry or ecology, you may have a different reason to be happy with what you see. You can be passionate about either (or both) and have reason to be excited about how the content promotes your cause.

From my vantage point as a youth worker, I spent the entire movie drawing parallels between the story line and God’s desire to do a new thing through us. The plot of 9 illustrates our rescue us from a certain destruction of our own creation. In 9, you’ll see obvious references to David and Goliath, Israel taking the Promised Land, Jesus’ rebuke of the religious leaders and the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made through his death on the cross.

This is a movie for leaders to see with their small group students. A great idea is to prepare students ahead of time by telling them to look for the biblical themes. Following the movie, leaders can have an amazing discussion with students about how it illustrates the biblical truths so boldly portrayed throughout the movie.

Finishing this book was like saying goodbye to an old friend. From the moment I began the journey through its pages, I knew I’d want to take my time. I savored every page.

A.J. Jacobs, though his genuine search for truth, invites his readers into his home and to tag along on some adventures seeking truth. While Jacobs does not believe in God, his journey reveals an amazing amount of culture behind why Jews and Christians believe and do the things we do.

He’s clumsy in his approach at times, surprisingly reverent at other times and incredibly funny throughout. No matter where you stand on your beliefs about religion or God, you will be glad you joined A.J. on his journey. I highly recommend this book to anybody who likes an easy read with a good sense of humor and adventure.
