Teaching Guys How to Treat Girls

This weekend and next Doug Fields is teaching a series on sex at our high school ministry. In preparation for that, I chose to lead a small group discussion on relationships this week in small group.

To prepare for a great discussion, I developed an online poll using PollDaddy.com. This worked as a great discussion-starter for the small group. The results were not a surprise, but they did get my students’ minds on topic and brought their opinions to the forefront. It was awesome how anxious they were to talk. In case you’re curious, click here to see the results of the poll.

Here are some highlights of our discussion:

1. I asked what type of attention girls seek through their actions, appearance and attitudes. The guys naturally took the negative slant to this. However, I also mentioned the positive ways they can get attention (or get the right attention) by the way they present themselves (mostly through the way they treat others).
2. After they shared the negative ways girls get attention and their minds were starting to enjoy the conversation a little too much, I dropped this question on them: “What if you discovered that girl you’re feeling that way about was your long-lost sister?” They didn’t like that very much. It was awesome!
3. I followed that up with 1 Timothy 5:2 “…treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.” (NLT) I told them that this was a good way to treat their peers, too.
4. These were my closing comments for the lesson:
– Reinforcing a girl’s attempts to get attention in a negative way can harm her self esteem
– By treating girls right (even as a friend), you set the bar high for what they will look for in a husband – they hopefully won’t settle for less
