Lesson Helpers: Inner Strength (David, week 1)

Tonight we began a 2-week series on David. The goal of this lesson was to help students see the value of the inner strength we gain from our devotion to God verses the outward strength the world looks at. We discussed how David was the least of all of his brothers, but was chosen to be king because of what God saw inside of him.

To open the lesson, I showed this clip from The Office:

The connection to the lesson was weak, but fun. I was using this as a way to show what happens when we don’t have inner strength… hollow spiritually on the inside when our faith is challenged. I wish I had thought to say it like that tonight. Hmmm… can I get a re-do?

Our verses were 1 Samuel 16, Psalm 139:13, Jeremiah 29:11

How I would rate the night on a scale of 1-10:
1. Effectiveness of the opener: 7 ~ The students enjoyed the video. It served its purpose well. We had a very short opener which allowed for an extra 20 minutes of small group time. This was especially useful for our girls’ group which still went over by 9 minutes.

2. Effectiveness of the small group time: 6 ~ The first part of the lesson didn’t go as well as I would have liked. The body language and non-responsiveness of some and the fidgeting of others said that they weren’t that into it. However, all of that changed when we started getting practical about what it looks to have inner strength in situations they face from day to day. We talked about mob mentality and how it’s so easy to go with the crowd and get caught up in the moment. One of my students brought up a scene in Lord of the Flies when they killed a boy because the leader told them to. I liked that because it showed he got it. The message sunk in that they need to have inner strength built by God to not get caught up in what the world is up to.

3. Overall grade for the night: B-
